Roane State’s Respiratory Care Program achieved a historic victory at the 2026 Tennessee Society for Respiratory Care (TSRC) Sputum Bowl, dominating the statewide competition held this year in Gatlinburg.
Facing off against other top respiratory therapy teams, Roane State students delivered a series of outstanding performances that culminated in a decisive championship win.
The Sputum Bowl—one of the signature academic competitions of the TSRC—tests students’ knowledge in respiratory care, mechanical ventilation, patient assessment, pathophysiology, pharmacology, diagnostics, and clinical decision making.
Teams compete in fast paced, buzzer driven rounds that require accuracy, speed, and teamwork under pressure. This year’s event brought together several highly competitive programs, all determined to claim the title.
In the opening round, the Roane State team delivered a sharp and confident performance, defeating Walters State Community College 25–13. Their momentum continued into the second match, where they showcased strong clinical knowledge and quick reflexes, securing a 23–14 victory over Jackson State.
The championship round placed Roane State against last year’s winner, East Tennessee State University (ETSU), described as a formidable team with a strong track record.
The Raiders rose to the occasion with focus and intensity, answering complex questions with precision and demonstrating exceptional teamwork. The final score, a commanding 32–9, earned Roane State the 2026 state title.
Rick Terwilliger, Roane State’s director of Respiratory Care, said this victory reflects the dedication, professionalism, and academic excellence of the program and its students.
“Their passion for the profession truly shined throughout the competition,” Terwilliger added. “It is a testament to both the faculty and the students who strive for excellence in the classroom and clinical practice. They have brought tremendous pride to our college."
News of the win did not come as a surprise to Roane State leadership who have noted the program’s frequent successes and recognition, including a 100% retention rate, a 100% job placement rate, and a 95% Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) success rate.
“Our program entered the competition well prepared, and it showed from the very first match,” RSCC President Chris Whaley said. “The win highlights the quality of our students as well as our commitment to preparing exceptional future respiratory therapists. Congratulations to each member of the team on this well-deserved victory.”
Roane State Respiratory Care is one of 12 programs in Tennessee offering either an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
With the state title secured, Roane State now stands as Tennessee’s leading respiratory therapy program in academic competition for 2026.
