The Roane State Film Festival will be held at the Princess Theatre in Harriman on April 11, 2026, to screen short films submitted by Roane State students and high school students from surrounding counties.
Students may submit short films (1-5 minutes) of any genre by April 3 to be included in the festival. The competition includes categories for both high school and college entrants. The winning films are decided by audience vote at the screening.
The film festival was launched by Roane State professors Matt Waters, Bryan Wilkerson, Jeff Snell, and Michael Golebiewski during the 2018-2019 academic year. Prof. Waters said the event was created “with the hope that our festival would be an annual springtime event to spotlight our student filmmakers and draw attention to Roane State's mass communications program."
Prof. Waters recently introduced the film category to the Roane State Academic Festival, which is targeted toward high school students, to gather their interest. Students are permitted to submit their short films to both the film festival and the Academic Festival.
Roane State students or local high school students who are interested in participating in either of these festivals can get more information by emailing Prof. Waters at watersmh@roanestate.edu or by visiting the film festival website at roanestate.edu/filmfestival.
