Subject: Occupational Safety and Health
  1. Purpose
    1. Roane State Community College strives to provide a safe and healthful working/learning environment for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The safety and health of students and employees is of primary importance in the operation of the college.
    2. The main goal of this safety and health policy is to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths.
  2. Background
    1. The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 mandates compliance by almost every employer in the United States. This public law, also known as OSHA, was designed to ensure safe and healthful working conditions.
    2. The Tennessee legislature enacted a comprehensive Occupational Safety and Health Law known as the "Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1972", also referred to as TOSHA.
  3. Policy
    1. All operations at Roane State Community College (RSCC) shall conform to all rules, regulations, and standards required by TOSHA and OSHA. It is the obligation of all employees to familiarize themselves with those standards that apply to them and to observe them at all times.
    2. Roane State’s Health and Safety manual was established to provide and maintain an effective, comprehensive and continuing effort to protect life and property. The manual is administered to protect the health, safety and well-being of the college community.
    3. It is designed to be a guide in planning, organizing and controlling related programs in each division and department of the college. This includes all facilities occupied or operated by an officially recognized group of students or staff.
    4. No employee is required to work at a job he/she knows to be unsafe or unhealthful. All employees are required to be constantly aware of conditions in their work areas and to immediately inform appropriate supervisors of any condition or situation beyond their ability or authority to correct. The full cooperation of each employee in detecting hazards and in turn controlling them is an essential part of their job responsibility.
    5. Any employee who believes that a violation of a job safety or health standard exists and threatens physical harm or that an imminent danger exists may request an inspection or express concern by completing the Safety Inspection Request/Concern form.
