Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)

Overview

AEMT is part of Emergency Medical Services.

This program is designed to provide the student with knowledge and skills of basic, and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and noncritical patients. Student learning will focus on expanding the level of understanding of human anatomy and physiology, disease process, initial assessment and patient stabilization, proper use of equipment such as automatic external defibrillators, oxygen administration, and airway management. In addition, the student will learn about intravenous therapy and pharmacological interventions. 

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certificate program is a one semester program. Applicants to the AEMT program will be selected in a cohort of 24 students per program location.

Students admitted to the program will complete an academic schedule of lecture, lab, and external learning experience (clinical) over a 15-week period. Cohort members will be in the classroom 18 hours per week for lecture and lab instruction and 8 hours per week for their external learning experience. During the external learning experience (clinical), AEMT students will be supervised by nursing and paramedic preceptors with various hospitals, clinics and EMS agencies across the East Tennessee region.

This program is designed to meet all State and National requirements to prepare for the AEMT exam given by the National Registry of Emergency Medication Technicians (NREMT). 

Class Location

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certificate program is offered at the Knox County Center for Health Sciences and designated RSCC satellite campuses. 

Accreditation/Approval

The Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Health Licensure and Regulation, Office of Emergency Medical Services provides program oversight. The program is approved by the Tennessee Board of Regents and is subject to the standard program evaluation required for performance funding.

Credentialing Requirements

Graduates of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) program are eligible to take the certification examination administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Salary and Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014-15 Edition, employment of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) is expected to grow 23 percent between 2012 and 2022much faster than the average for all occupations. As the population continues to age, there will be an increasing demand for Emergency Medical Technicians.

According to the most recent information provided by the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual mean wage for EMTs and paramedics in Tennessee is $32,970.

Work Settings

AEMTs are employed in a variety of settings including emergency medical services, fire departments, rescue squads, hospitals, clinics, and industrial facilities.

All tuition and fees are subject to change by the Tennessee Board of Regents.

* A Specialized Allied Health Science Fee of $25 per credit hour will be applied to all Allied Health Science courses. See Tuition and Fees link above. Liability insurance fee of $42.50 is added to all student accounts to cover mandatory insurance requirements.
