President Barack Obama has proposed making two years of community college free for students nationwide. The proposal is modeled on the Tennessee Promise, launched last year by Gov. Bill Haslam and based on tnAchieves, which started in Knox County.
“The president’s proposal is great news for community colleges,” Roane State President Dr. Chris Whaley said. “We are especially pleased that President Obama’s proposal includes adult learners. For adults who want to go back to school, taking out a loan is often the only way that they can pay for their education. Under the president’s initiative, adults will have the support they need to earn degrees and credentials that lead to good jobs. President Obama’s proposal is a game-changer.”
According to the White House, the proposal includes the following requirements:
