Classroom Challenge

Boggle by Krystie Anderson, Humanities Division

Overview: Boggle is a collaborative activity you can use at any point during the semester but works well as an introduction to your course content. Posing a question about your course’s relevancy is a clever way to invite students to think about your subject’s importance to their life. Any question will work if it has the possibility for multiple answers. If you are awarding bonus points, consider the max number of points or incentive the winning group will receive.

Estimated Time: Allow 30-40 min, but if you have a large class or want to shorten the activity, give students just one minute to come up with answers.

Instructions:(1) Groups of 2- 4. (2) Groups have 1-2 minutes to write down as many answers as possible. One student per group will record answers.

(3) Have everyone stand. Group 1 will start each round. (4) Each group will give 1 answer. Use digital or white board to record each answer. The group recorder will mark off answers they also have. (5) When the group runs out of answers, they sit down. When the last group runs out of answers, the game is over. (4) To conclude the activity, scroll through everyone’s responses, discussing any that stand out to you and your students. Award points/incentives accordingly.

Why You Should Try This Activity: Boggle is such a versatile activity that can be used to gather a multitude of responses over a relatively short period of time. It is useful to help students see how many different responses there are to the same question, and you can also benefit from understanding what students know about a particular topic.

Distracted: Why Students Can’t Focus and What You Can Do About It by James M. Lang

“In Distracted, Lang rethinks the practice of teaching, revealing how educators can structure their classrooms less as distraction-free zones and more as environments where they can actively cultivate their students' attention. Brimming with ideas and grounded in new research, Distracted offers an innovative plan for the most important lesson of all: how to learn.” Available on Amazon
