Roane State Community College environmental health technology student Brooke Pitchers was the college’s first nominee for SkillsUSA Tennessee Outstanding Technical Student of the Year.
Pitchers, of Harriman, has been an exceptional student in Roane State’s two-year environmental health technology program while balancing responsibilities as a single parent and community volunteer.
“We were honored to have Brooke represent Roane State as the college’s first-ever nominee for SkillsUSA Tennessee Outstanding Technical Student of the Year,” said Don Lanza, dean of Roane State’s Social Science, Business, and Education Division. “She is an outstanding student who is dedicated to her education.”
Pitchers, a mother of two, has made the college’s Dean’s List three times and the President’s List (4.0 GPA) once. She is also a founding member of Roane State’s Adult Advisory Board and presenter for the college’s adult student orientation program.
Pitchers has been a volunteer coach for soccer and baseball youth leagues. She also volunteers in her church youth program on Wednesday nights, her church’s clothes closet, and at the Kingston Community Center.
Pitchers said her goal is to start her career in the environmental industry and obtain more certifications to advance in the safety compliance and industrial hygiene sectors. She plans to finish her bachelor’s degree by 2020. Her long-term goal is to work at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
“When I decided it was time for me to go to school and have a career, many factors contributed to my decision such as being close to home, a flexible class schedule, and the time it would take to finish my degree,” Pitchers said. “I wanted a college that had a program that would embrace my uniqueness, including my interest in being in the field and understanding the practical application of my academic work. Roane State Community College provided all of that.”
