The Roane Choral Society awarded Music in Education Grants to the Rockwood High and Harriman High choirs.
April 18, 2019
Grants ranging from $450 to $500 have been awarded to choral programs in three area high schools by the Roane Choral Society, directed by Roane State Music Professor Brenda Luggie.
Winning grants for the 2018-2019 concert season were Rockwood High and Harriman High choirs, both directed by Beth Trescher; and Rhea County High School Chorus directed by Randy Bright.
The Music in Education Grants are based on "the impressiveness of the application and presentation of work that is being accomplished by each choral group," according to a news release.
The grants are part of a continuing effort to support music education, the news release states.
The Roane Choral Society is now in its 47th season and has performed a wide variety of choral music in East Tennessee since 1972.
Luggie has a unique perspective as the society's director because she's been both a singer and member of the group's board of directors.
"Roane Choral Society is a wonderful community group that offers all participants a chance to stretch their musical experiences and abilities, as well as foster community involvement and lasting relationships," Luggie said.
