What is the LPN Challenge Exam?
The LPN Challenge Exam is administered through Health Education Systems Inc. (HESI) and designed to assess a potential students fundamental clinical knowledge as it pertains to the nursing process.
Who Takes the LPN Challenge Exam?
The LPN Challenge Exam is taken by LPN applicants who are applying to the LPN Career Mobility Nursing Program. LPN-RN applicants may take the LPN Challenge Exam prior to LPN licensure, but must have an active LPN license prior to final acceptance into the program. Candidates who do not enter the program after 3 years of testing the LPN Challenge Exam will be required to repeat the exam process. On the day of the examination, the applicant is required to present an active Tennessee Practical Nurse license or a signed letter from the LPN program director verifying eligibility to sit for the LPN licensure exam.
What is the Fee for the LPN Challenge Exam?
The fee for the LPN Challenge Exam is $35.00 and is NON-REFUNDABLE. You may go by the Business Office/Cashier at the Roane County or Oak Ridge Campus to pay your test fee. Please remember to KEEP YOUR RECEIPT - you are required to present it to the testing proctor on the day of your exam.
The testing fee is non-refundable. Failure to cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours in advance will require a new testing fee. Cancellations prior to 48 hours will be allowed to retest within one academic calendar year at no charge. Please remember to retain your payment receipt if you intend on testing at a later date.
When and Where is the LPN Challenge Exam Offered at RSCC?
The LPN Challenge Exam is offered by appointment at the Roane County (Harriman) Campus and the Oak Ridge Branch Campus. Please see the following schedule for specific dates and times at the two locations:

Please note: Your Roane State Identification Number (R#) is required! If you do not know your R#, log on to Raidernet and retrieve that information before trying to register for a test. What Do I Need to Bring on the Day of My Test?
You will need to bring a government issued photo ID (Driver's License, State ID Card, Passport, or Military ID), receipt of test fee payment, your Roane State ID number (R#), AND a copy of your active Tennessee Practical Nurse License or a signed letter from your LPN program director stating you are eligible to sit for the LPN licensure exam. These ARE REQUIREMENTS for your testing appointment. Failure to provide any of this information may result in cancellation of your reservation and forfeiture of your testing fee.
Any necessary testing materials will be provided (scratch paper, pencils, calculator) by the Testing Center. Dictionaries, personal calculators, electronic devices, instructional materials, or notes are NOT allowed during testing.
PLEASE NOTE: CELL PHONES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE TESTING CENTER. If a cell phone rings or a student is found using a cell phone for ANY purpose, they will be asked to leave and their scores WILL BE processed as is and noted as invalid. A 6 month mandatory wait period for retesting will be in effect under these circumstances.
What Kind of Questions Are On the LPN Challenge Exam?
The computer based LPN Challenge Exam consists of 55 multiple choice questions covering a variety of nursing fundamentals and concepts such as: the role of nursing in healthcare delivery; basic human needs; legal and ethical considerations; therapeutic communication; vital signs and physical assessment; promotion of comfort and safety; hazards of immobility; infection control; wound care; medication administration; oxygenation; perioperative care; sensory alterations; psychosocial, cultural and family factors in health care; loss, death, and grief; and patient education. Furthermore, you may encounter questions requiring mathematical conversations in relation to the nursing process.
When Will I Get My LPN Challenge Exam Scores?
Test results will appear on the computer screen immediately after you have completed the exam. RSCC Testing Centers will NOT print test results. You may access your results anytime through your Elsevier account which you will create at the time you take the exam. Keep a record of your Elsevier account username and password so that you may refer to the account if the scores are needed at a later time. Furthermore, a record of your LPN Challenge Exam score will be posted to your Raidernet account under Student Self Service. Please allow 5 - 10 business days for the information to appear on your record.
PLEASE NOTE: The scores will automatically be sent to the Allied Health Sciences and Nursing Admissions Office to be recorded to your electronic file. You do NOT need to notify the Nursing Admissions Office that you have completed your testing requirement.
Are Re-Takes Allowed for the LPN Challenge Exam?
RSCC allows students to re-take the exam after a minimum 3 month wait period.* Each time an exam is taken the examinee is required to pay the full fee.
*Scores from RSCC or any other institution must adhere to the above re-test procedures to be considered valid for RSCC admissions requirements and prerequisites.
