Five high school seniors from Roane County will begin their freshman year at Roane State Community College with a $500 Tennessee Scholars scholarship.
The students are Allison Frogg, Rockwood High School; Lauren Walden, Roane County High School; Aaron Noe, Oliver Springs High School; Jessie Lewis, Midway High School; and Gabby Kilgore, Harriman High School.
Students decide in their eighth-grade year if they want to participate in the Tennessee Scholars program. Participating students then follow the requirements of the program throughout their four years in high school. Tennessee Scholars students were encouraged to apply for the Roane State scholarships. Winners were selected through a drawing at the Tennessee Scholars breakfast held in April.
The mission of Tennessee Scholars is to increase the percentage of Tennessee high school graduates who are prepared for postsecondary education, the workforce, or the military. The Tennessee Scholars initiative encourages students to take more demanding classes throughout their high school years as well as contribute to their communities via community service activities.
Roane State supports the initiative by offering scholarships to students from Tennessee Scholars high schools located in the college’s service area.
The $500 scholarship award is used to help pay for tuition, books or fees. Fall classes at Roane State begin Aug. 24.
