If you are concerned about a student, it’s OK to initiate a conversation with them. Expressing concern does not mean that you are trying to act as counselor or that you are scolding them. Here are some guidelines for having these conversations:
It’s important to remember that for most of us, in our roles as faculty or staff members, conversations are not legally considered confidential. If someone expresses a desire to harm themselves or someone else, it’s essential that you get help by calling 911, Campus Security, or Counseling Services.
