If you are concerned about a student, it’s OK to initiate a conversation with them. Expressing concern does not mean that you are trying to act as counselor or that you are scolding them. Here are some guidelines for having these conversations:

• Describe your observations (in private)
  • “I’ve noticed that you’re not participating in discussions and you seem withdrawn.”
• Share that you are concerned – express this openly and state why you are concerned
  • “I’m concerned because this is a shift from your normal behavior in class”
• Ask for the student’s perspective – and listen
  • “Help me understand what’s going on for you” or “Can you tell me more about this?”
• Ask the student if they are getting support and encourage appropriate connections
  • “How are you taking care of yourself right now?” or “Is there something I can do to help?” or “If it’s okay with you, I’d like to connect you with [appropriate resource] on campus”
• Follow up with the student after a little time has passed
  • “Hey, just wanted to check in. Were you able to connect with [insert resource]? “How are things?”

It’s important to remember that for most of us, in our roles as faculty or staff members, conversations are not legally considered confidential. If someone expresses a desire to harm themselves or someone else, it’s essential that you get help by calling 911, Campus Security, or Counseling Services.
