News: New international studies course focuses on WWII and the Holocaust

July 6, 2023

An international studies class focused on World War II with an emphasis on Nazi Germany and the Holocaust will be offered this fall on Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus.

The course, taught by Political Science Professor John Brown, will cover the history of Nazi Germany, World War II, and the targeting of the Jewish population and other victims of Nazi atrocities. The class will attempt to address how a modern, developed nation such as Germany could succumb to such horror.

In addition to regular class lectures, several Holocaust and World War II related films will be shown and discussed, including Schindler’s List, Judgement at Nuremberg, Downfall, Defiance, and more.

“As we lose living witnesses to the Holocaust, it’s important that we never forget the horrors they endured,” Prof. Brown said. “At a time of increased global instability, an understanding of the dangers of hate is as important as ever.”

The special section of Introduction to Global Studies (INTL 1010) will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-1:50 p.m. ET on the Oak Ridge campus. The three-hour class is a social science general education course.

Anyone interested in taking the course can find it listed in Roane State’s schedule of classes at roanestate.edu/schedule. Just select “INTL” under the subject field to locate the course listing.

Questions can be directed to Prof. Brown by emailing brownjn2@roanestate.edu.
