Carolyn Bush Roddy has been selected for the TCCAA Sports Hall of Fame for 2024. Roddy is a native of Kingston, Tennessee, and served as assistant coach for the Roane State Women's Basketball team in 1996.
Roddy played basketball at Hiwassee College after graduating from Roane County High School in 1971. She earned All-American accolades during her two years on the Madisonville campus.
Also in 1971, Roddy was chosen to testify in federal court on behalf of women in Tennessee for Title IX and women’s right to play full court basketball.
After two years playing for the Lady Tigers, she finished her playing career at Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas. Upon graduation, she was selected as a member of the 1975 Pan American Team which earned gold at the 1975 Pan American Games.
Another Tennessean on the 1975 Pan Am team was Pat Head (Summitt). Roddy would later join Coach Pat Summitt's summer basketball camp coaching staff, at the University of Tennessee, in 1987 and continue as a camp instructor for 28 years.
Roddy also played basketball professionally for the Dallas Diamonds of the Women's Professional Basketball League from 1979 to 1982, when she retired. Later, she would become the head coach at Hiwassee College. She also served as the head coach at Knoxville College for three years.
Upon her retirement, she returned to Kingston where she was an agency-wide Quality Assurance Case Manager at the Michael Dunn Center and an attendant for students with special needs. Roddy is now a TNALL Assistant Tutor in the Roane County School District. She lives in Kingston with her husband Steve.
On March 2, 2024, Roane State will host a special recognition for Roddy, marking her hall of fame induction with the TCCAA. The recognition is scheduled to occur during the home basketball games in the gymnasium on the Roane County Campus. The Lady Raiders will take the court at 2 p.m. ET, followed by the men's game at 4 p.m. ET.
