Subject: Bereavement Leave
- Roane State Community College provides all regular, full-time and part-time employees time off without loss of pay due to the death of an immediate family member as defined below, consistent with T.C.A. § 8-50-113.
- Definitions
Immediate family - shall be deemed to include spouse, child, stepchild, parent, stepparent, foster parent, parent-in-law; sibling, grandparent and grandchild and any other member of the family who resides within the employee’s home.
Day is equivalent to 7.5 hours.
- Policy - Bereavement Leave
- An employee who is absent during his/her regularly scheduled work week due to the death of an immediate family member will receive paid bereavement leave as follows:
- Three (3) days / 22.5 hours
• Death of a sibling, grandparent, grandchild, foster parent or parent-in-law
- Five (5) days / 37.5 hours
• Death of a parent or stepparent
- Ten (10) days / 75 hours
• Death of a spouse, child, or stepchild
- For other family members not covered under the definition of immediate family, employees may refer to RSCC policy PA-10-01 Sick Leave, which addresses the use of sick leave in these circumstances.
- In addition to the bereavement leave outlined above, up to two (2) days additional sick leave days (15 hours) may be granted at the discretion of the appropriate approving authority in the instance of death of immediate family member.
- The approving authority may permit the employee to take leave on non-consecutive days.
- Regular part-time employees, including academic personnel scheduled to carry less than a full teaching load or its equivalent, regardless of probationary status, shall be eligible to receive bereavement leave on a prorated basis equal to the percentage of their employment.
To the extent that a discrepancy exists between this policy and related TBR or state policy or law, TBR and state policy shall take precedence.
