Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Multi-Factor authentication adds an extra verification step to make sure that you are who you say you are. You may be familiar with MFA already as most banks, online sites- Google, Amazon, etc. already require or offer it (usually in the form of a text to your phone to verify you are logging in).
Currently, Roane State offers 2 choices. MFA using a text to a phone or using a mobile authenticator app (ie. Microsoft Authenticator). For more information on Microsoft Authenticator, visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/mobile-authenticator-app

Implementation
Roane State is currently in the beginning stages of requiring MFA. Once this new policy is in place, you may need to recreate your account information on your phone or mobile device. We have found it easiest to delete your account and recreate it on the device.
Below is what will be impacted during the first phase of implementation.
Students- Email access, all Office 365 apps (Teams, OneDrive, etc.)
Employees- All Office 365 apps (Teams, OneDrive, etc.)
In the second phase, MFA will be required for Employee email access, Raidernet, Banner, VMWare and other external systems as compatibility is confirmed.
What are my MFA options?
You will be able to choose a primary authentication method when you register, which you can change or update at any time. Roane State currently offers 2 main options:
Verification Method | Description |
Mobile Notification (Microsoft Authenticator supported) | A push notification is sent to the authenticator app on your smartphone asking you to Authenticate your login credentials |
Text Messages | A text message with a 6-digit code is sent to your cell phone that you will input to complete the authentication process. |
Lost Device or Possible Breach of Password
If you ever are suspect of a breach of your password or device, please visit here https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info and click on the Sign-out Everywhere link.
We strongly recommend letting your Roane State’s Help Desk know if your phone was lost or stolen. The Help desk can make the appropriate updates to your account. After your settings are cleared, you'll be prompted to register again for two-factor verification the next time you sign in.
