Phishing is defined as tricking individuals into disclosing sensitive personal information through deceptive computer-based means. Roane State email (Microsoft 365) has added a new tool for alerting the IT team to phishing and malicious emails- the Phish Alert Button.
This button will allow you to report specific emails to the IT Security team, where we can view them and determine whether or not they are a legitimate threat. The email will be deleted from your mailbox once you report it. If the email is a phishing attempt, then IT will be able to remove the email from the mailboxes of all faculty and staff. If the email is benign, then it will be returned to your inbox.
Keep in mind that spam emails are not necessarily phishing emails. While it is possible that spam emails can be malicious, usually it is just unsolicited or unwanted email. If you are not sure whether your email is a phishing attempt or spam, then err on the side of caution and report it as phishing.
You can visit this link describing the process and for more information.
If you have any further questions (or you do not have the Phish Alert Button installed), you can reach out to our Help Desk at (865) 354 – 3000 ext. 4357 or create a ticket via www.roanestate.edu/helpdesk.
In Outlook, you should see the button on the upper right hand side of the Toolbar. Simply open the email and click on this button to alert IT.

For Android, tap the three dots in the top right corner of the email, then tap the Phish Alert button at the bottom.
For Apple, tap the three dots in the top right corner of the email, then tap the Phish Alert button at the top of the menu window.
