“The Indelible Coal Creek War and Mining History: Grasp the Impact” Lecture, Feb. 9, 12:30pm, RSCC Oak Ridge Campus City Room
Barry Thacker of the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation, Inc., will give the special lecture in the City Room (A-111) at 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, February 9. Among the topics discussed will be the Coal Creek War and the mining disasters at the Fraterville and Cross Mountain mines. The Coal Creek War was an 1890s uprising in Anderson County, which occurred after coal miners in the area were replaced by convicts leased out from the state prison system. The Fraterville and Cross Mountain mining disasters, in 1902 and 1911 respectively, killed a combined 300 miners and are among the worst mining disasters in U.S. history. Thacker, a Knoxville engineer, founded the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation, Inc., in 2000. Over the years, the foundation has awarded college scholarships to students who attended Briceville Elementary School.
