Medical Laboratory Technology
Associate of Applied Science

A day in the life
Laboratory professionals examine blood or body fluid specimens under the microscope for bacteria, parasites, fungus, or cells that might indicate cancer or other diseases. They perform quality control checks, evaluate new instruments, and implement new test procedures.
Three reasons to consider this program.
- Not every healthcare career requires direct patient care. Although they support medical professionals, medical lab techs complete their work behind-the-scenes.
- Medical lab tech careers are thriving across the country. This demand makes finding the perfect job easier for you.
- Entering the workforce as a medical lab technician is pretty quick. You can be ready for employment in as little as two years.
Before you sign up, make sure you understand...
- There are blood and body fluids involved with this work.
- This is a science heavy program. You must have a strong background in the sciences in order to succeed.
- The work of a laboratory technician is vital to patient care. You must be willing to always put patients first.

The medical laboratory technician is a vital part of the health care team working under the direct supervision of a physician and/or medical technologist. Medical laboratory technicians (MLTs) perform a wider range of laboratory tests in diverse clinical settings such as a hospital, clinic, and/or a physician office. The laboratory tests are performed on body fluids including blood, sputum and stool.
This program consists of 2 semesters general course work, 3 semesters of laboratory specific coursework (with the last two semesters also consisting of clinical externship rotations). Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to sit for the National Board of Certification exam and obtain state of Tennessee licensure.
