Medical Informatics Program

Overview

This new program will provide a pathway for students who are interested in a career in Medical Informatics as either a technician or developer. The discipline-specific courses offered during the first year will be the same for either concentration and required for the medical informatics career options in the second year. Following the first year, students will select which career option they wish to pursue. The current collection of major field courses will be adjusted to accommodate this progression.

Students completing this program will not only meet all prerequisites to continue their education to become a medical informatics professional, they will have earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Informatics.

Class Location

The HIMT courses in the curriculum are offered online only. General education and computer courses are available on most Roane State campuses and may be offered online. The Roane state course schedule should be reviewed when determining location of your classes.

Length of Training

This is a 2 year program after completing the prerequisites and acceptance into the program Students complete 1 semester of prerequisite classes and 3 semesters of Medical Informatics curriculum classes.

Program Application Deadline

Spring Semester Start: October 31
Fall Semester Start: May 15

Certification

Professional certifications or credentials are not required to work in the Medical Informatics field. However, two professional organizations do offer credentialing exam related to this profession.

The Medical Informatics curriculum is not specifically aligned with either of the certification exams at this time.

* Program courses that are taken in an online format are subject to a distance education fee. A Specialized Allied Health Science Fee of $25 per credit hour will be applied to all Allied Health Science courses. See Tuition and Fees link above.
