 Welcome to the Education Department!

RSCC's education department's purpose is to provide a program of study that will contribute to the preparation of future teachers. Through instruction, outreach efforts with public schools and the use of technology, the department strives to prepare its students to transfer to four-year colleges where they will be successful in attaining a degree and license to teach.

The courses are taught by specialists in their field of study who constantly strive to provide research-based instruction that enhances learning through critical thinking, knowledge of human development and the psychology of teaching. The faculty also strives to educate students regarding the behaviors of a multi-cultural pluralistic society in which they will teach.

RSCC's Education Department offers classes for students transferring to a four-year university to complete their bachelor's degree and obtain a teaching license. Currently, we offer programs for the foloowing:

• Early Childhood Education (Pre-k-3)
• Elementary Education (K-5)
• Secondary Education (6-12) 
  • AST in Secondary Education- Math
  • AST in Secondary Education- Social Studies
  • AST in Secondary Education -English
  • AS in Secondary Education
• Special education
• Physical Education

We offer a 2+2 program with Tennessee Technological University (TTU) for Elementary Education. Students will complete the first two years of coursework at RSCC working towards their AST degree. The third and fourth year coursework will be taken at a RSCC campus, but through TTU.

Students also have the option to complete their AST or AS degree with our education department and transfer to another university to complete their bachelor's degree through an articulation agreement.

TTU's 2+2 Elementary Education Program

The TTU's 2+2 program for elementary education enables students to complete a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education on one of following RSCC campuses: Oak Ridge, Roane, or Scott (potential for a Cumberland county cohort with enough student interest). The first two years of coursework are taken with RSCC by completing the AST degree. The last two years of coursework are taken through TTU while allowing students to remain on a RSCC campus. Most classes are day classes, but schedule is determined by TTU and may change.

AST Degree Requirements

• Successful completion of all coursework
• Attainment of a 2.75 cumulative GPA
• Sucessful completion of Praxis Core exam. The minimum scores for each section are 150 Math, 156 Reading, and 162 Writing. Praxis Core is not required if a minimum ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 1020 has been earned. 
• Satisfactory rating on all disposition forms rated by three professionals 
  • K-12 teacher/principal/guidance counselor
  • RSCC education faculty member
  • RSCC general education faculty member (outside of education)

Locations

• RSCC Education courses: Oak Ridge, Roane, and Scott counties and online options. (Cumberland and Campbell counties have potential for courses with high student interest)
• TTU 2+2 Elementary Education courses: Oak Ridge, Roane, and Scott counties

Work Settings and Salary

K-12 classrooms, depending on area of certification with a salary range of $35,000 - $45,000
